Checkers Rules

Checkers is a classic board game, dating back to around 3000 BC. It is very simple, but a lot of fun! Checkers is known as Draughts in England and there are multiple variations of it all around the world. The game is played on an 8x8 chequered board, essentially a chess board. Each player starts with 12 pieces, placed on the dark squares of the board closest to them. The objective of the game is to kill all the opponent's pieces by jumping over them.

Gameplay

Pieces can only move diagonally on the dark squares, the light squares of the board are never used. A normal move is moving a piece diagonally forward one square. The initial pieces can only move forward diagonally, not backwards. You cannot move onto a square that is occupied by another piece. However, if an opponent piece is on the square diagonally in front of you and the square behind it is empty then you can (and must!) jump over it diagonally, thereby killing it. If you land on a square where you can kill another opponent piece you must jump over that piece as well, immediately. One turn can kill many pieces. It is required to jump over pieces whenever you can.

If a piece reaches the end row of the board, on the opponent's side, it becomes a King. Kings can move diagonally forwards and backwards, making them more powerful in jumping over opponent pieces. However, if you jump over a piece to become a King you can not jump backwards over another piece in the same move, you have to wait until the next turn to start moving backwards.

Jumping over opponents is required. However, if you have two possible moves, where one jumps over one opponent and the other jumps over two or more opponents you are not required to take the jump with the most opponents killed, you are just required to take any jump move.

Winning

The game can end in four different ways:

  1. If a player has lost all his pieces he loses.
  2. If a player can't move at all, all his pieces are blocked, he loses.
  3. The exact same board state has come up three times without any men killed in between. The game ends in a draw. This is to avoid situation with two pieces left just moving around never being able to kill each other.
  4. There have been 100 moves (50 for each player) with no piece killed. The game ends in a draw.

3-In-1 Checkers is a fun 1-player online version of the well-known Checkers board game (also called Draughts). You play against the computer, and have to remove all of your opponent’s checkers pieces by jumping over them and landing on a similar colored square to the one that you jumped from. Unlike most online checkers games this version has some new playing modes which add a cool twist to the classic strategy game. Pit your wits against varying levels of computer-controlled opponents, and try your best to come out on top.

Your strategic planning abilities will be exercised, as you have to carefully plan your moves in advance. Surprisingly, your quick reactions will also be tested, as some of the game modes require quick-fire moves and fast decision making. Have you got the strategic know-how to be crowned the Checkers King (or Queen)? See if you can ‘sweep the board’, and defeat the computer. Good luck!

How to Play: There are three different game modes to choose from – Standard, Giveaway and Extreme. Before you start a game, you can adjust the difficulty level of the computer by moving the Difficulty Bar on the right hand side of the main menu screen. In Standard Mode, you play a normal game of checkers, taking turns against the computer. Your goal is to ‘jump’ all of his pieces until there are none remaining on the board. You can only capture one of your opponent’s pieces by ‘jumping’ over it and landing on a similar colored square to the one that you jumped from.

You control the Red Checkers, the computer controls the Whites. Move your pieces by clicking and dragging them using your computer mouse or touchpad. If one of your pieces makes it to the opposite end of the board, it becomes a King. Until then, the piece can only move forwards. Once it becomes a King, the piece can move forwards and backwards as you wish. Keep jumping your opponent’s pieces until none remain to win the game. In Giveaway Mode, the objective is the opposite – the player who gets rid of all of his pieces first wins the game. In Extreme Mode, the rules are different again. There are no turns, you can move as many times as you like in a row – if you are fast enough.
