The Marshall JMP-1 preamp is an awesome unit. The first time I came in contact with this preamp I was blown out of my mind. It all began when I started to play more seriously and when I was in search of a sound of my own. I was all into the components, which mean that I wanted the preamplifier the power amp and the effect unit to be separate components. I tried the expensive Mesa Boogie Triaxis and I did not feel very satisfied with it. That unit is really good but it had to be paired up with a loud power amp like the Mesa Boogie 90/90 and for my porpoises, that is mainly playing small clubs and jamming at home, that was not an option. When I recorded my first solo album I came across the Marshall JMP-1 preamp in the studio and when I tried it, it really blew my mind. When I finished recording my solo album I immediately sold the Mesa Boogie Triaxis preamp and got me the aforementioned Marshall preamp.
  • The Marshal JMP -1 was my favorite preamp for a long time and I must say that the options on this device and the possibilities are endless and awesome. It has a nice array of distorted sounds and you can also emulate the rectifier sound of the Mesa Boogie. On the internet you can find a lot of presets that emulates the distortion sounds of a lot of well known players like Steve Vai, Joe Satriani and Yngwie Malmsteen just to mention a few. The clean sounds are also very good, especially when you use some delays and reverbs with it. You can also adjust the output volume on the aforementioned device so it can be quiet for bedroom practice/use. It has also a switch for +4db/-20db on the back which can come very handy for home practicing without disturbing the neighbors or waking up the kids when they take a nap. Another feature of this marvelous unit is that is midi controllable, it has also an effects loop which is awesome for multi effect components like the G-major for example which brings us to the following.

We recommend users keep the default value. Download drivers pcchips p33g.

  • The configuration with which I used the Marshall JMP-1 was with the TC electronic G-major as a multi effect processor, and as a power amp I used the Mesa Boogie 20/20 which I later sold and regret it ever since. It was a really awesome warm sound and you could customize it to your needs to perfection. I think that one day I certainly will get this setup back. For now I will just try a lot of other amplifiers just to know what all the options on the market are.

  • Regarding the durability and the quality of the product I think that the Marshall JMP-1 is built to last through time and it certainly passed the test of time also for it`s sound quality. It is built rock solid and it endured a lot of traveling and temperature variations being in the truck of a car in all kinds of different climate conditions. The only thing that I replaced on it was the phones jack because the plastic that surrounds it is made of plastic and it is bound to wear off in time. The input jack will too probably.

  • I have also opened the device in some sort of upgrading attempt which was to replace the tubes inside with the Mesa Boogie tubes for better sound. When I came with this idea to a professional technician, he told me that after all measurements the stock tubes in the Marshall JMP-1 are so well balanced that it would not make any sense to replace them so I was told that if it works, do not tamper with it. This is another example of how well done the Marshall JMP-1 preamp is.

  • I tried the JMP-1 with many guitars like the Fender Stratocaster, different types of Ibanez guitars and some Jackson guitars, and even the 7-string models, and also with the effects that were being put in front of the device and in the effects loop and it always sounded good. My opinion is that the JMP-1 is made for playing rock and heavy metal music and also pop in some cases. The most extreme genres of music like death metal ,and on the other hand jazz, requires some different kind of distortion/clean I think. But for everything else this device is pretty awesome. It is also an awesome unit to experiment with and to try to find your own favorite sound that later you can maybe find better on some other amplifier. All in all, the Marshall JMP-1 is a good preamp which I highly recommend and today you can find it around second hand at a really affordable price.

Regarding the Marshall company, I think that there is nothing much to say about. They are pretty much the industry standard and every guitarist on the planet has at one point used their products, so in my opinion, you can not go wrong in buying anything from them. Highly recommended indeed.
